ABOUT MUNGWI

The Council is located in Mungwi District in Northern Province of Zambia. The District is about 30 Kilometers (Km) from Kasama district the Provincial capital of Northern Province of Zambia and 880 Kilometers (Km) from Lusaka. The district covers a surface area of 9,766 Square Kilometres (Km2) (976,600Ha) and a population density of 15 Persons/Km2 the latitudinal and longitudinal position of Mungwi District is 31º22ʹ 9.91ʺE east and 10º10ʹ 23.52ʺS South Respectively. Mungwi Town Council is a corporate body established under Article 152 of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No.2 of 2016 and Section 6 of the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019. As a Local Authority, the Town Council administers the Mungwi District.

ORDINARY COUNCIL MEETING

The Secretariat of Mungwi Town Council is headed by the Council Secretary. The Council Secretary and the rest of the Secretariat are appointed by the Local Government Service Commission.

The Council Secretary is assisted by four (5) Chief Officers responsible for Finance, Planning, Works, Human Resource and Administration, Community Services and two (2) units namely Procurement and Internal Audit.

The Council is Composed of an elected Council Chairperson, thirteen (15) elected Councilors from Fifteen (15) wards as provided for under Article 153 (2) (c) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No.2 of 2016. The current Council was elected to office in 2021 to serve a five-year term up to 2026. The Deputy Council Chairperson was elected from among the Councilors in 2021 for the period of two and half years while the current was elected on 3rd April 2024 to serve for a period of 2 and a half years.

UKUSEFYA PA NG'WENA OF THE BEMBA PEOPLE

The district has one (1) Paramount Chief Chiti Mukulu, and other two Senior Chiefs Makasa who resign in the east while Chief Chimbola reside in the Matengele region which is the central part of the district.

Traditionally, the two chiefs pay tribute to the paramount chief Chiti Mukulu. Chief Chiti Mukulu resign Supreme over all the Bembe chiefs in Mungwi district and across Northern Province. 

Mungwi district is the hosting district of the ukusefya pa ng’wena traditional ceremony of the bemba speaking people.

The Kayambi Mission- oldest church built by European missionary known as Bishop Dupont

  • Rosa mission – A parish in mungwi which celebrated 100 years of existence in 2022 and it is also known as St Yves Rosa Parish.

Chambeshi River – a significant water resource in Mungwi district flowing through about 400 kilometres. It is one of Zambia’s four major water sources of domestic use, livestock and agriculture especially rice
